Splittings of Toric Ideals

Let $I \subseteq R = \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be a toric ideal, i.e., a binomial prime ideal. We investigate when the ideal $I$ can be "split" into the sum of two smaller toric ideals. For a general toric ideal $I$, we give a sufficient condition for this splitting in terms of the integer matrix that defines $I$. When $I = I_G$ is the toric ideal of a finite simple graph $G$, we give additional splittings of $I_G$ related to subgraphs of $G$. When there exists a splitting $I = I_1+I_2$ of the toric ideal, we show that in some cases we can describe the (multi-)graded Betti numbers of $I$ in terms of the (multi-)graded Betti numbers of $I_1$ and $I_2$.

Conditional Random Quantities and Iterated Conditioning in the Setting of Coherence

We consider conditional random quantities (c.r.q.’s) in the setting of coherence. Given a numerical r.q. X and a non impossible event H, based on betting scheme we represent the c.r.q. X|H as the unconditional r.q. XH + μH c , where μ is the prevision assessed for X|H. We develop some elements for an algebra of c.r.q.’s, by giving a condition under which two c.r.q.’s X|H and Y|K coincide. We show that X|HK coincides with a suitable c.r.q. Y|K and we apply this representation to Bayesian updating of probabilities, by also deepening some aspects of Bayes’ formula. Then, we introduce a notion of iterated c.r.q. Abstract In this paper we analyse the efficiency of the sports betting market, seeking to ascertain whether the market is efficient in the case of fixed odds provided by bookmakers in the four major European soccer leagues under the semi-strong efficiency hypothesis. By examining the trends of odds in the event of a major change in expectations about team results, i.e. when the head coach of a team is replaced, we attempt to verify the argument that a profitable strategy for the bettor is likely to be possible. Regularity and h-polynomials of toric ideals of graphs

For all integers 4 ≤ r ≤ d 4 \leq r \leq d , we show that there exists a finite simple graph G = G r , d G= G_{r,d} with toric ideal I G ⊂ R I_G \subset R such that R / I G R/I_G has (Castelnuovo–Mumford) regularity r r and h h -polynomial of degree d d . To achieve this goal, we identify a family of graphs such that the graded Betti numbers of the associated toric ideal agree with its initial ideal, and, furthermore, that this initial ideal has linear quotients. As a corollary, we can recover a result of Hibi, Higashitani, Kimura, and O’Keefe that compares the depth and dimension of toric ideals of graphs.

The essay analyzes the recent regulatory and jurisprudential developments in gaming and betting, focusing peculiarly on the public administration’s responsibility pro le for the act committed by its concessionaires towards the consumer. The script criticized, in particular, the orientation of the Court of Cassation according to which the supervisory and control powers weighting on the p.a. towards the gaming and betting concessionaire give rise to indirect liability pursuant to art. 2049 of the Italian Civil Code.
